Hisato Nagano, MD. PhD.
Postdoctoral Scholar

Hisato Nagano is a postdoctoral researcher in the Nakauchi Lab, working on skin stem cell biology. He was born and raised in Kagoshima, Japan, and graduated from the National Defense Medical College. As a medical officer in the Japan Self-Defense Forces, he was involved in national defense duties, disaster response, and clinical medicine. As a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, he has treated patients with cancer, trauma, and burns.
After earning his Ph.D. through research on the wound healing potential of mesenchymal stem cells, he began working in the field of organ regeneration in 2020 at the Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo, and later at the Tokyo University of Science, in the Laboratory for Stem Cell Therapy.
His current research focuses on generating human skin grafts using developmental niches in vivo, and on identifying optimal culture conditions for skin-derived stem cells. Outside the lab, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his two sons and making the most of life in California.
